Benue: Apera declares 2027 bid, promises inclusive representation for Makurdi/Guma

A development expert and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Iorwakwagh Apera, has formally declared his intention to contest the Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 general elections, pledging to deliver “practical, responsive, and accountable” representation.

Unveiling his aspiration under the theme “Kwagh U Aondo – An Idea Whose Time Has Come,” Apera said his decision was driven by the need to address persistent socio-economic challenges confronting communities across Makurdi and Guma Local Government Areas, LGAs.

He noted that despite nearly three decades of democratic governance since 1999, many residents still grapple with insecurity, unemployment, limited access to healthcare, and declining agricultural productivity.

According to him, “effective representation must be grounded in the felt needs of the people,” stressing that there is an urgent need to align development efforts with community priorities.

Apera, who has worked extensively across government and international development organisations, said his approach to leadership would prioritise continuous engagement with constituents and measurable outcomes.

“Representation is not symbolic, it must be practical, responsive, and accountable,” he said.

To achieve this, the APC aspirant disclosed plans to establish quarterly community engagement forums, a responsive constituency office, and a transparent feedback system to ensure constituents’ voices are heard and acted upon.

Highlighting his experience, Apera said he brings “decades of leadership across social protection, poverty reduction, governance, and economic empowerment initiatives,” adding that his network would help attract investments and development programmes to the constituency.

He also identified insecurity, youth unemployment, farmer-herder conflicts, and weak rural infrastructure as key issues requiring urgent attention. “Our communities deserve solutions that are rooted in reality and driven by impact,” he stated.

On inclusion, Apera emphasized the need for equitable representation within the constituency, pointing out that since 1999, the House of Representatives seat has been occupied by leaders from a single axis.

While acknowledging their contributions, he argued that the current moment calls for broader inclusion.

“At this critical time, equity demands a shift. The Nongov bloc deserves not just inclusion, but the opportunity to lead,” he said, adding that his candidacy aims to strengthen unity rather than create division.

He further pledged strong commitment to youth and women empowerment through skills development, entrepreneurship support, and improved access to finance.

According to him, “empowering young people and women is key to sustainable development and prosperity.”

Describing himself as a unifier, Apera said Makurdi/Guma requires leadership that bridges divides and fosters collective progress.

“This is not about division, but about equity, inclusion, and ensuring every segment feels represented,” he added.

He assured constituents of transparent leadership, regular communication, and visible impact if elected, insisting that Makurdi/Guma deserves “a new direction anchored on inclusive development and practical solutions.”
