Breaking...INEC says it may shift 2027 election dates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the legal basis for the dates announced for the 2027 General Election, following public concerns over their coincidence with nationally recognised holidays and observances.

In a press statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the timetable and schedule of activities were developed in strict compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2022.

INEC explained that its regulations, in force since 2019, clearly stipulate that elections into the offices of President and Vice President, as well as the National Assembly, must hold on the third Saturday of February in a general election year. Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to take place two weeks later.

In line with these provisions, the Commission fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

However, the Commission acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the overlap of the scheduled dates with certain national holidays and observances, which some fear could affect voter turnout and participation.

“INEC remains sensitive to all legitimate concerns that may impact electoral participation and the overall conduct of elections,” the statement noted.

The electoral body disclosed that it is currently undertaking consultations with relevant stakeholders and may, if necessary, seek legislative intervention to address the issues raised.

It stressed that any potential adjustments would remain consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and credible elections, INEC assured the public that it would provide timely updates on any developments regarding the 2027 General Election.
