Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar resigns on health grounds

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has tendered his resignation, effective immediately.
In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former minister cited health concerns as the reason for stepping down from the cabinet.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his service to the country.
The President is expected to communicate his nominee for a new Minister of Defence to the Senate later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023, by President Tinubu.
His resignation comes at a critical time, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency. The Presidency has indicated that the President will provide more details on the scope and implementation of the security measures in the coming days.
