D’Tigress fall to Germany, shift focus to World Cup

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, ended their FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament campaign in Lyon with an 81–73 loss to Germany, exposing late-game struggles despite a strong showing.
The Nigerians kept pace early, trailing 17–14 and 18–17 in the first two quarters before edging the third 21–19 to stay within reach. However, Germany dominated the final quarter 27–21 to seal victory.
Elizabeth Balogun led Nigeria with 15 points, while Murjanatu Musa scored 13 and captain Amy Okonkwo added 12.
The game also marked an emotional farewell for Sarah Ogoke, who scored three points in her final national team appearance.
D’Tigress showed flashes of quality in Lyon, including a 101–84 win over the Philippines, but suffered defeats to South Korea, France, and Germany—often fading late in games.
Despite the results, Nigeria has already qualified for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin after winning a fifth straight AfroBasket title. The Lyon tournament served as preparation, with lessons to build on ahead of the global showdown.
