Atiku Abubakar joins ADC after leaving PDP

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the coalition-backed party he is expected to align with ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku confirmed the development on Monday via his X handle, where he posted a photo of himself holding an ADC membership card with the caption: “It’s official.”

His defection comes months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, following a prolonged internal crisis within the party. Atiku’s exit occurred barely two weeks after a coalition of opposition politicians adopted the ADC as their platform for the 2027 presidential race.

Hours after his media aide, Paul Ibe, announced his resignation, Atiku released a letter dated July 16 explaining the reasons behind his departure. The letter, addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, cited irreconcilable differences and what he described as the party’s deviation from its founding principles.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the former Vice President stated in the letter.
