Maresca hints at internal strain as Chelsea weigh contingency plans

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has sparked speculation about potential unrest at Stamford Bridge after openly questioning the level of support he receives within the club.

Despite guiding the Blues to a comfortable Premier League victory over Everton at the weekend, the Italian adopted a reflective tone in his post-match remarks, describing the previous 48 hours as the most challenging of his tenure so far.

Maresca declined to name specific individuals but suggested he has felt a lack of backing behind the scenes, comments that are unlikely to be ignored at a club renowned for its readiness to make swift managerial changes. While there is no immediate indication that Chelsea are preparing to act, reports suggest senior figures are already considering contingency plans should the situation worsen.

The club’s ownership is believed to be exploring a range of potential options, including high-profile, trophy-winning managers, experienced coaches currently without clubs, and emerging talents making their mark across Europe. Any decision would hinge on Chelsea’s short- and long-term objectives, as well as the availability of suitable candidates.

Among the names reportedly under discussion is former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, whose success at the highest level continues to attract interest despite being out of management since 2021. Gareth Southgate, recently relieved of his duties as England manager, is also being considered, even though he has not coached in the Premier League for several years.

Chelsea are also monitoring the progress of younger managers, including Liam Rosenior, who has impressed at Strasbourg following promising spells in England. His links to Chelsea’s ownership structure could ease any potential approach. A return for club legend Frank Lampard has also been mentioned, with the former midfielder enjoying a resurgence in the Championship after a strong run of results with Coventry City.

Elsewhere, Brendan Rodgers, who began his coaching career in Chelsea’s academy and has since claimed major honours in England and Scotland, remains available following his recent exit from Celtic. Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is another option, having won domestic trophies during his time at Old Trafford but currently out of work after a turbulent spell in recent roles.

For now, Maresca remains firmly in charge at Stamford Bridge. However, his candid comments have ensured that scrutiny of Chelsea’s managerial future will intensify unless unity and clarity are swiftly restored behind the scenes.
