Amnesty International has condemned the alleged display of a rifle at a campaign rally by opposition politician, Aminu Warkal, in Jan Bulo, Kano State.

The human rights organisation described the incident as a “lawless act” capable of encouraging violence and putting lives at risk, urging Warkal’s political party to publicly distance itself from the incident.

In a statement, Amnesty International called on security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the display of the rifle and ensure that politicians who incite violence, either directly or indirectly, are held accountable.

The organisation warned that the incident was particularly concerning against the backdrop of the ongoing campaign season, stressing the need for political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly.

“Amnesty International strongly condemns the display of a rifle at a campaign rally by opposition politician Mr. Aminu Warkal, at Jan Bulo Kano,” the organisation said.

“His political party must also distance itself from this lawless act that may encourage violence and endanger lives.”

Amnesty urged Nigerian authorities to strengthen measures to protect citizens from violence while ensuring full respect for freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association throughout the campaign period.

It further reminded the government of its obligations under international human rights law, particularly the responsibility to protect citizens and ensure accountability for violations.

“Nigeria has an obligation under international law to respect and protect human rights, which requires that effective measures are taken to combat impunity,” Amnesty said.

The organisation stressed that political campaigns should not become platforms for the promotion or display of weapons or conduct capable of threatening public safety.

It therefore urged the authorities to ensure that all political actors operate within the law and that any act capable of inciting violence is thoroughly investigated and appropriately sanctioned.
