Fubara unfazed by impeachment talk, says he has nothing to hide

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains calm amid impeachment rumors, insisting he is ready to face any lawful process, the state government said on Friday.

The governor’s Special Adviser, Darlington Orji, made the position known during a television interview, stressing that Fubara only became aware of the alleged impeachment move through media reports.

According to Orji, no formal notice or official communication has been served to the governor.

Orji explained that the Rivers State House of Assembly had earlier announced a recess, scheduled to reconvene around January 28, 2026.

However, lawmakers reportedly held an emergency sitting outside the planned schedule.

He clarified that Governor Fubara was not in Rivers State at the time of the emergency session, dismissing claims that he deliberately avoided the Assembly or fled the state to escape the impeachment process.

“Up until this moment, the Governor has not received any formal proceedings from the State House of Assembly,” Orji said. “He is not a spirit to preempt the Assembly. They had announced a recess, and he decided to step out during that period for rest or other official matters.”

The aide emphasized that the governor is not intimidated by impeachment threats, asserting, “The Governor is not afraid of service because there is no cockroach in his cupboard. He has nothing to hide.”

Orji also stressed that reports suggesting an impeachment notice had been served were false, reiterating that Fubara is prepared to cooperate with due process if and when it occurs.

The governor’s stance comes amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, where some lawmakers have signaled interest in initiating impeachment proceedings against him.

Political analysts note that Fubara’s calm response could be an attempt to project confidence and reassure the public of his commitment to transparency and lawful governance.

The State House of Assembly is expected to officially reconvene on January 28, 2026, which could determine the next steps regarding the impeachment rumors.
