Amnesty International demands probe into attack on Peter Obi in Benue

Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian authorities to conduct an impartial, independent and timely investigation into the alleged attack and obstruction of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his entourage in Benue State.
In a statement reacting to the incident on its social media handle, the human rights organisation condemned the reported blocking of Obi and his supporters by armed youths, describing it as a serious threat to political freedom and democratic participation.
Amnesty International said, “Blocking an entire political party and its supporters from entering a state is the highest level of political intolerance,” stressing that no part of Nigeria should become a no-go area for anyone.
The organisation noted that democracy thrives on freedom and justice, urging the authorities to ensure that those responsible for the incident are properly investigated and held accountable.
It said the announcement of the arrest of suspects by the authorities was only the beginning, adding that repeated attacks and intimidation of opposition figures could make it increasingly difficult for them to freely associate and hold public gatherings.
“No one should lose their life or face violence simply for taking part in peaceful political activities,” Amnesty International said.
