IGP Disu restructures Police Monitoring Unit, appoints DCP Abubakar as Head

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms to improve efficiency, strengthen internal oversight, and reinforce discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.

As part of the changes, the IGP also sanctioned a leadership transition, appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Aliyu Abubakar as the new Head of the Police Monitoring Team to oversee the operations of the restructured unit.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed that the restructuring was necessary to refocus the unit on its core responsibilities, address operational challenges, and reposition it as a credible internal accountability mechanism within the Force.

He explained that the reorganisation has streamlined and strengthened the unit to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time oversight of personnel and operations across commands, formations, and departments.

He added that the new framework also harmonises key investigative and monitoring functions in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda.

Before his appointment, DCP Abubakar served at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State Police Commands, where he played key roles in several high-profile investigations.

He is recognised for promoting professionalism, transparency, and community-oriented policing.

The IGP noted that the reform is aimed at entrenching professionalism, discipline, and transparency within the Force, stressing that the Monitoring Unit will be central to identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustained reforms, institutional development, and delivering a more accountable, professional, and citizen-focused policing system.
