INEC Benue suspends Voter Registration December 10, sets December 15-21 for display of register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benue State has announced key developments in its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) timetable, including the suspension of the first phase of the exercise on December 10, 2025.

In a statement issued by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Sam Egwu, the Commission urged citizens, political actors, and all stakeholders to take note of the updated schedule and participate actively in the forthcoming activities.

“The ongoing first phase of the Continuous Voters Registration which started on 25 August 2025 will be suspended on 10 December 2025,” Prof. Egwu said.

He emphasised that the suspension was part of INEC’s standard procedure to allow for verification and cleanup of the voter register.

As part of the next steps, the Commission announced that the Preliminary Register of Voters will be displayed at INEC offices across the 23 Local Government Areas and at the state office for public scrutiny.

“Further to that, there shall be display of the Preliminary Register of Voters at the LGAs and the state office for claims and objections from 15 December 2025 to 21 December 2025,” the REC stated.

He explained that the one-week display period is crucial for ensuring that corrections, objections, or necessary inclusions were made before the register is finalised.

“This is an important window for voters to confirm their information, raise concerns where necessary, and help us maintain a clean and credible register,” he added.

Prof. Egwu also disclosed that the second phase of the nationwide registration exercise would resume at the start of the new year.

“The second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration shall commence on 5 January 2026,” he announced.

INEC called on political parties, civil society organisations, community leaders, the media, and eligible residents to “take note of the dates in the timeline,” stressing the need for full public cooperation to enhance the credibility of the electoral process.
