An abducted medical doctor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir, has regained his freedom after his family reportedly paid a N50 million ransom to his captors in Edo State.
Dr. Tahir was kidnapped alongside his younger brother on January 2, 2026, while they were opening the gate to their residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi.
The abduction threw the family and the community into distress as efforts were made to secure their release.
Tragedy, however, struck days later when the lifeless body of Dr. Tahir’s younger brother was discovered on January 5 by the Orley River, along Down City Pride Road, Igbira Camp. He was said to have been killed by the abductors.
Speaking on the development, the father of the victims disclosed that the kidnappers demanded and received a total ransom of N50 million before releasing his surviving son. According to him, the money was paid in two instalments of N20 million and N30 million.
He explained that raising the ransom required collective efforts, including contributions from family members, friends, non-governmental organisations and other well-wishers.
The distraught father also revealed that Dr. Tahir sustained a bullet injury on his leg during the ordeal and is currently receiving medical attention.
He added that vigilantes and local hunters who laid an ambush for the kidnappers before the release informed him that one of the suspects was also injured by gunfire.
“My son has been released after we paid N50 million. I am relieved that he is alive, but I am devastated because I lost another son,” he said.
He added, “The family could not have raised the money alone. Organisations, friends and well-wishers supported us. My son was brushed by a bullet and is now being treated in the hospital.”
Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command has confirmed the release of the abducted doctor. The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development on Thursday.
“I can confirm to you that the doctor has been released,” the police spokesman said.
