Fresh bloodshed in Benue: Seven killed, many injured in herders' attack on Logo community

Seven persons have been reportedly killed and several others injured following renewed attacks by suspected armed herdsmen on Channel One, a border settlement along the Arufu–Wukari road in Ukemberagya/Tswarev Council Ward of Logo Local Government Area, Benue State.

The violence, which reportedly spanned two days, from the weekend into Monday afternoon, has left residents in panic, with many fleeing their homes amid fears of further assaults.

A community source, who asked not to be named, said the attackers invaded the area in large numbers and operated on motorcycles, shooting sporadically as they moved through the settlement.

“The attack started over the weekend and continued into Monday. Seven people have been confirmed dead, while several others sustained serious injuries,” the source said.

According to him, victims with life-threatening injuries were evacuated to hospitals in Anyiin, while about seven critically injured persons were further referred to Ugba, headquarters of Logo LGA, for treatment.

He also alleged that the attackers may be operating from Shaor, a deserted village previously flagged in intelligence reports as a suspected hideout for armed groups.

“The attackers were heavily armed and came on motorcycles. We suspect they are using Shaor and other abandoned settlements as bases,” he added.

The renewed assault has triggered fresh displacement, with residents of Channel One and neighbouring communities reportedly abandoning their homes for safer locations.

A resident described the situation as frightening, noting that the recurring nature of the attacks has left communities living in constant fear.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Logo LGA, Clement Kav, confirmed the killings.

“They killed seven persons and injured four others. They usually strike and retreat to where they come from. The attack happened late Saturday into Sunday night,” he said.

Kav added that he had alerted relevant security authorities on the development.
“I have already briefed the Commissioner of Police and the Adviser on Homeland Security,” he stated.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said the command was yet to receive official information on the incident at the time of filing this report. “We are yet to be briefed,” she said.

The latest attack underscores the persistent insecurity troubling border communities in Benue State, with renewed calls for intensified security operations and coordinated interstate collaboration to curb further violence.
