Iwambe makes history as Benue’s first 2027 female guber aspirant, unveils agenda

Mrs. Msurshima Iwambe has entered the 2027 governorship race in Benue State, making history as the first woman to declare interest in the contest.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant formally unveiled her ambition before journalists and supporters, presenting herself as a candidate ready to confront the state’s pressing challenges with what she described as a people-centered approach.

Iwambe, a native of Konshisha Local Government Area, is a 1998 graduate of Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. She has spent over 25 years in public service at the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), rising to the directorate level.

Declaring her intention, she said her aspiration was rooted in a commitment to service and a clear understanding of the realities facing the state.

“Today, I stand before you as a proud daughter of Benue State, a mother and a public servant with a deep understanding of the realities confronting our people,” she said.

She acknowledged the contributions of previous administrations but noted that significant challenges persist, particularly in the areas of security, economic stability and social welfare.

“The challenges before us remain profound and urgent,” she stated, adding that, “these realities demand a leadership approach that is both firm and compassionate, strategic and people-centered.”

The aspirant argued that the time was ripe for female leadership in the state, pointing to the track record of women in leadership positions across Nigeria and globally.

“Women have demonstrated exceptional leadership, resilience and results-driven governance. The time has come for Benue State to benefit from this perspective,” she said.

Iwambe outlined a Five-Point Agenda to guide her administration if elected. The agenda includes security reform and community protection, agricultural transformation, improved education and healthcare systems, transparent salary and pension management, and inclusive empowerment for women, youth and persons with disabilities.

She assured that tackling insecurity and prioritizing the welfare of workers and retirees would be central to her administration.

“I am prepared to deliver measurable results. My experience in public service and understanding of grassroots realities position me to serve effectively,” she said.

Calling for unity, she urged fellow aspirants and stakeholders to work collectively for the progress of the state.

“This is not a contest of division, but a shared mission to restore and reposition Benue State,” she added.

Iwambe reaffirmed her commitment to serve with humility and dedication, expressing optimism that Benue State can achieve greater progress through inclusive and responsive leadership.

Her declaration drew support from notable figures. Former SUBEB official, Dr. Margaret Bija, described her as a credible and capable leader.

“She has the qualities and attributes of a good leader and deserves the support of the people,” Bija said.

Also, retired civil servant, Dr. Julie Ibu, appealed to the electorate to support Iwambe’s ambition. “She means well for the state and should be given the opportunity,” she noted.

An APC elder in Konshisha LGA, Isaacs Akase, called on the party to back her candidacy, stressing the importance of inclusivity. “Women should be given a chance to govern the state,” he said.
