Tinubu seeks Senate confirmation of newly appointed Service Chiefs

By Benedicta Aboh

President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate seeking the screening and confirmation of the newly appointed Service Chiefs as required by law.

The request was conveyed in a letter read on Tuesday by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, during plenary.

The Service Chiefs recently appointed by the President are:

General Olufemi Oluyede – Chief of Defence Staff

Major-General Waheedi Shaibu – Chief of Army Staff

Rear Admiral Idi Abbas – Chief of Naval Staff

Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke – Chief of Air Staff

Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye – Chief of Defence Intelligence

President Tinubu said the confirmation would enable the new military leadership to effectively assume their duties and support ongoing national security operations.

The Senate President subsequently referred the request to the Committee of the Whole, noting that the screening exercise has been scheduled for next week.

The appointment of the new Service Chiefs comes as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to tackle insecurity challenges across the country, including terrorism, banditry, oil theft, and other emerging threats.

Meanwhile, expectations are high as Nigerians look to the new military hierarchy to drive reforms within the Armed Forces and strengthen inter-agency collaboration in safeguarding lives and property.
