Troops foil kidnapping attempt on Otukpo–Enugu expressway, rescue 20 passengers

Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation WHIRL STROKE have successfully foiled a kidnapping attempt along the Otukpo–Enugu Expressway in Benue State, rescuing several passengers and forcing the assailants to flee into the bush.

According to a statement by the Acting Media Information Officer, HQ JTF Operation Whirl Stroke, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu the incident occurred on the night of 22 December 2025 around 10:00 p.m., following a distress call that prompted troops on routine patrol to swiftly mobilize to the Amoda axis in Ohimini Local Government Area.

He stated that the armed criminals had emerged from the bush and briefly occupied an existing checkpoint. They subsequently stopped two 18-seater commercial buses travelling from Jos, Plateau State, to Ibadan, Oyo State, and attempted to abduct all passengers.

“The timely intervention of our troops led to a firefight that compelled the kidnappers to abandon their victims and flee,” the statement said.

15 passengers were initially rescued and handed over to the Nigerian Police Division in Otukpo. Six adults and four minors were initially reported missing; however, subsequent operations led to the rescue of an additional five adults and all four minors, who are now in the custody of the Police Area Command, Otukpo. Search efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining missing passenger.

Commenting on the operation, Force Commander JTF Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, praised the troops for their professionalism and prompt response. “I commend our men and women for their dedication and courage. Our commitment to safeguarding lives and property remains unwavering,” he said.

He added that sustained offensive operations, intelligence-led patrols, and coordination with other security agencies would continue to deny criminal elements freedom of action.

Major General Gara also extended warm Christmas and Yuletide greetings to Christians in Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States. “I pray that the season brings God’s abundant mercy, peace, and enduring joy to families and communities,” he said. He urged all believers to remain united, shun violence, and uphold the virtues of love, humility, tolerance, and compassion exemplified by the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Joint Task Force reiterated its resolve to continue proactive measures to ensure the safety of travelers and residents within its Area of Responsibility.
