Nehemiah Danjuma makes history as Northern Nigeria's first deaf lawyer

Nehemiah Danjuma has etched his name in Nigeria's legal history after being called to the Nigerian Bar, becoming the first deaf lawyer from Northern Nigeria.

Danjuma, an indigene of Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, achieved the milestone after successfully completing his legal education, earning a Second Class Upper degree in Common Law from the University of Ilorin before proceeding to the Abuja Campus of the Nigerian Law School for the Bar Part II programme.

Announcing the achievement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Danjuma described the moment as a historic breakthrough.

"First Deaf Lawyer from Northern Nigeria. Called to the Bar. History made," he wrote.

His accomplishment has drawn widespread praise from members of the legal profession, disability rights advocates and well-wishers, who described it as a landmark achievement for inclusion and equal opportunity in Nigeria.

Observers say Danjuma's success demonstrates that physical disabilities need not be barriers to excellence, while inspiring many young persons with disabilities to pursue their academic and professional aspirations.

The milestone is also being celebrated as a major boost for disability inclusion and representation within Nigeria's legal profession, reinforcing calls for greater accessibility and equal opportunities across educational and professional institutions.
