Plateau orders immediate school closure, urges calm amid security fears

The Plateau State Government has urged residents to remain calm following its directive for the immediate shutdown of schools across the State as a precaution against emerging security threats in parts of the country.

In a circular issued on November 21, the State Ministry of Education, in conjunction with the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB), ordered all Government Junior Model Secondary Schools to close from Saturday, November 22, 2025. Primary and day schools were also instructed to suspend activities from Monday, November 24.

The Ministry clarified that all academic and administrative operations are to remain on hold until further notice.

Following the announcement, parents in the Jos/Bukuru metropolis trooped to various schools on Saturday to retrieve their children, leading to noticeable movement across the area.

Authorities explained that the decision was informed by recent reports of student abductions in some States, prompting the government to take proactive measures to avert any potential threat within its borders.

Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, appealed for calm and advised parents, school administrators, and community leaders to comply fully with the closure directive. She cautioned against the spread of unverified information capable of causing panic.

Ramnap assured residents that Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration is prioritising the safety of students and the general public, stressing that the situation remains under control.
