Super Eagles cruise into CAF playoff final after extra-time triumph over Gabon

Rabat, Morocco – Nigeria advanced to the CAF playoff final on Thursday after a commanding 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon in Rabat, keeping their World Cup qualification hopes alive.

The Super Eagles overcame a resilient Gabonese side in a thrilling encounter that saw all five goals scored after the 75th minute. The win sets up a decisive showdown against either DR Congo or Cameroon, with a place in the intercontinental playoff on the line.

Both sides started the game with intensity, but clear chances were scarce until the 78th minute when Akor Adams capitalized on a defensive blunder to put Nigeria ahead. Gabon, however, drew level in the 89th minute as Mario Lemina’s deflected strike forced extra time.

Nigeria regained control in extra time, with Chidera Ejuke restoring the lead in the 97th minute after a clever pass from Wilfred Ndidi. Victor Osimhen then took center stage, netting twice, first with a sharp angled finish in the 102nd minute, and again eight minutes later, to seal an emphatic win for the Super Eagles.

Head coach's tactical adjustments proved decisive, as the introduction of Frank Onyeka in the 83rd minute reinforced the midfield, while Chidozie Awaziem and William Troost-Ekong shored up the defense late in the game.

Despite Gabon’s late push, Nigeria’s backline held firm to secure passage to the final round of the CAF playoffs.

With the victory, the Super Eagles edge closer to a World Cup berth and now await the outcome of the DR Congo versus Cameroon clash to determine their next opponent.
