Edo govt explains sacks of two traditional rulers, gives reason

The Edo State Government has removed two traditional rulers in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, citing the need to restore peace and stability in the affected communities.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Governor Monday Okpebholo announced the removal of the Olososo of Ososo, Bamidele Obaitan, and the Zaiki of Ikpeshi/Egbegere Clans, Luckman Odamah III.

According to the statement, the decision followed a comprehensive review of disputes and tensions surrounding the traditional leadership structures in both communities.

“The government acted in the interest of peace and stability after assessing the circumstances surrounding ongoing disputes relating to the traditional leadership of the communities,” the statement read in part.

To ensure continuity and avoid a leadership vacuum, Governor Okpebholo approved the appointment of Mr. Nicholas Odamah as Regent of the Ikpeshi/Egbegere Clan. He is to oversee the affairs of the clan in a custodial capacity and fully cooperate with government directives.

For Ososo, the governor directed the elders of the four quarters (Unukhus), the Council of Chiefs, and the community’s elders to immediately begin consultations and present a consensus candidate for appointment to the vacant stool. The process, he said, must reflect the customs, rotation principles, and collective will of the Ososo people.

Both deposed traditional rulers were ordered to hand over all government properties and instruments of office in their possession to the Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Council without delay.

The state government appealed to residents of Ososo, Ikpeshi, Egbegere, and the entire Akoko-Edo area to remain calm, assuring that security agencies have been mobilized to maintain peace and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
