Zamfara lawmaker assaulted by angry constituents iver alleged abandonment

A member of the House of Representatives from Zamfara State, name withheld  was on Tuesday assaulted by an angry crowd in Dansadau town, following mounting resentment over his alleged failure to fulfill campaign promises and maintain a visible presence in his constituency.

Eyewitnesses said the lawmaker was beaten, dragged on the ground and nearly overwhelmed by residents who accused him of abandoning the community after securing electoral victory. A video circulating on social media platform X, shared by user @jrnaib2, showed the visibly distressed legislator being slapped and manhandled as security operatives struggled to shield him from the surging mob, which pulled him in different directions.

Throughout the incident, the crowd repeatedly chanted “bamayi,” a Hausa expression denoting rejection, as they vented their anger. Some constituents claimed the attack was the culmination of years of frustration, alleging that repeated pleas for development projects, empowerment programmes and constituency engagement were ignored.

Security personnel eventually overpowered the attackers and rushed the shaken lawmaker into a waiting vehicle before escorting him away from the scene.

As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the lawmaker had not been officially confirmed, and neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the House of Representatives had issued a formal statement on the incident.

The development has since sparked intense reactions on social media, with many Nigerians interpreting the incident as a reflection of growing public anger against elected officials. Observers say the episode underscores the widening gulf between elected representatives and their constituents, as public frustration over perceived governance failures continues to simmer across the country.
