Benue ASP killed after foiling robbery, neutralises three attackers

An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Aondoaver Asom, has died from gunshot injuries sustained while repelling an armed robbery attack in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The officer reportedly neutralised three of the assailants during the exchange of fire.
ASP Asom, who was attached to the Operations Zenda Joint Task Force (JTF), was said to be on his way to a new posting when the incident occurred on February 24.

He was travelling in a commercial vehicle along the Ugbema–Jato-Aka road when armed robbers ambushed the vehicle at Amile community.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen suddenly emerged and attacked the vehicle, forcing it to a halt. In the ensuing confrontation, the police officer identified himself and engaged the attackers in a gun duel to protect himself and other passengers.

During the exchange, ASP Asom successfully brought down three of the suspected robbers, preventing what could have resulted in multiple casualties. Other members of the gang reportedly fled into nearby bushes following the resistance they encountered.

However, the officer sustained severe gunshot wounds in the process. He was immediately rushed to the General Hospital in Gboko for urgent medical attention.

Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, ASP Asom was later confirmed dead at the hospital. His death has since sparked an outpouring of grief among colleagues, family members and residents of the area.

Security sources described the late officer as courageous and dedicated to duty, noting that his actions saved the lives of the passengers aboard the vehicle. They said his sacrifice underscored the risks security personnel face daily in the line of duty.

Meanwhile, security operatives have reportedly intensified efforts to track down the fleeing members of the robbery gang, as authorities reassured residents of continued operations to curb criminal activities along the affected route.
