Suspected herdsmen kill over 15 in Ojatele community, Benue state

At least 15 people have been killed following an attack by suspected armed herdsmen on Ojantele community in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State.

It was gathered that the attack which occurred Friday afternoon, left several residents injured and many others still missing as the people continue to flee for their lives.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a community member said the attackers arrived with a large herd of cattle before opening fire on residents returning from their cashew farms.

"It was a sudden and unprovoked attack. The herders were grazing their cows without interference, but when women and children were returning home, they started shooting indiscriminately and overran the community.

“The death toll could have been higher if people had not fled in time. So far, we have recovered about 15 bodies and treated 11 others who were injured. The injured have been taken to a hospital in Ugbokpo, the Local Government headquarters,” the source added.

Another community member who confirmed the attack, describing it as “completely unjustified. Our community is now deserted. We appeal to the government for urgent help. These were innocent people simply trying to make a living.”

The Chairman of Apa Local Government Area, Mr. Adams Ochega, confirmed the incident but said he was yet to receive a full report.

“Yes, there was an attack, but I am away on an official assignment. I will have more information by tomorrow evening,” he said.

Attempts to reach the Benue State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, for comment were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or text messages.

The attack has sparked fear among residents, highlighting growing concerns about insecurity in communities across Benue State.
