Suswam’s rumoured defection sparks fresh political recalibration in Benue

Political circles in Benue State are currently abuzz with intensifying speculation over the possible defection of former governor, Senator Gabriel Suswam, from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Suswam, a major pillar of the ADC in the state since his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had only recently dismissed reports linking him to any planned departure from the party he helped nurture alongside other national political heavyweights.

The rumours gained traction weeks ago when he was expected to publicly declare for the APC during a pre-defection dinner hosted by Governor Hyacinth Alia. Suswam’s portrait was prominently featured on event banners among personalities billed to defect, but his conspicuous absence heightened interest and confusion.

Days later, the former governor dramatically rejected talk of a secret defection, describing such an act as beneath his political stature.

“I am too big to dump the ADC in secret. That would be a disgrace to my personality and a betrayal of my loyalists,” he declared at a public function, reiterating his pride and commitment to strengthening the party’s structure across Benue and beyond.

However, a surprising shift emerged on Monday when his media aide, Bartholomew Bede, hinted on a verified social media handle that Suswam has now begun wide-ranging consultations with family members, loyalists, and key stakeholders to determine his next political move.

Bede, who described Suswam as “highly methodical” and “systematic,” announced that a major development is imminent and an official statement will be issued in the coming days.

According to him, the consultations underscore Suswam’s commitment to collective decision-making and transparency, a leadership trait his supporters have often applauded.

“As a servant leader, nothing and nobody is being taken for granted,” Bede noted, assuring supporters that their concerns remain central in determining the former governor’s trajectory.

Suswam, believed to enjoy a cordial relationship with Governor Alia, may be on the brink of a major repositioning capable of redefining the state’s fast-shifting political landscape.

For now, Benue waits.
