Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University recruits Over 70 First-Class graduates, holds maiden Alumni orientation

The Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JoSTUM), formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (FUAM), has made history by offering employment to over 70 First-Class graduates from various academic fields.

The recruitment, described as the first of its kind in the institution’s history, was officially celebrated at a maiden reception and orientation program for the newly recruited staff, marking a significant milestone in the University’s drive to retain top talent and strengthen its academic foundation.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including the National President of the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Alumni Association (JoSTUMAA), Engr. Theophilus Ukaa, the Campus Branch Chairperson, Engr. Dr. Kumator Taku, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Isaac Itodo, as well as members of the Alumni Association and the organizing committee.

Speaking at the occasion, Engr. Ukaa expressed gratitude to God and praised the collaborative efforts that made the recruitment possible. “It is with great pleasure and gratitude to Almighty God that I welcome you all to this august occasion. We are gathered here today to officially welcome our young graduates and formally induct them as alumni members of our great institution,” he said.

He highlighted the historic nature of the exercise, noting that it was unprecedented in the University’s history. “This is the first time in the history of the University that there is one single massive recruitment of graduates, predominantly from our alma mater.

"Out of over 300 candidates recruited, 80 percent are academic staff, and of these, 80 percent are graduates from our University, including over 70 First-Class graduates across various colleges and departments,” he explained.

Ukaa emphasized that the recruitment was not merely about filling positions but represents a strategic investment in the University’s future. “This exercise will go a long way in ensuring knowledge retention in the University and will also ensure a gradual and systematic take-over of control in the effective leadership and management of the University in no distant time,” he stated.

He also commended the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Itodo, for conducting a transparent, merit-driven, and inclusive recruitment process. “The recruitment process has reinforced public confidence in the University’s leadership and has set a remarkable benchmark for fairness, equity, and institutional integrity,” Ukaa said.

He added that the administration’s deliberate decision to recruit a significant number of First-Class graduates underscores confidence in the quality of the University’s products and its commitment to strengthening the academic foundation from within.

Engr. Ukaa further praised the Vice Chancellor’s achievements since assuming office, noting that over 180 academic staff have been promoted to professorial ranks, new colleges and departments have been created, previously scrapped programs restored, and infrastructural development across the campus has transformed the University’s physical and academic landscape.

These initiatives, he said, have positioned JoSTUM as a center of academic excellence and innovation in the region.

Prof. Itodo, speaking through the National President, urged the newly recruited employees to dedicate themselves fully to their responsibilities. “Desist from engagement in any act that could tarnish the reputation of the University and dedicate your time and energy to your core responsibilities,” he advised.

The Campus Branch Chairperson, Engr.  Kumator Taku, welcomed the new employees warmly, acknowledging the University administration for its visionary leadership in ensuring a merit-based recruitment process.

“Your presence here is not by chance, it reflects your competence, dedication, and the value you bring to the University. Embrace the culture of this institution, built on integrity, collaboration, innovation, and mutual respect,” he said.

He encouraged the staff to actively engage with the Alumni Branch as a platform for professional growth, mentorship, and solidarity.

Convener and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Rachael Duche described the orientation program as a celebration of continuity and a bridge between alumni and the University. “Your transition from students to members of staff represents a full circle of growth, responsibility, and commitment to excellence. Approach your new roles with dedication, integrity, and a passion for continuous learning,” she said.

She noted that the program is also an opportunity to foster alumni participation in institutional development, strengthen professional networks, and encourage a sense of belonging within the University community.

The orientation program included presentations by esteemed Professors aimed at equipping the new staff with insights into university operations and governance. Professor John Ogoli delivered a lecture on Academic Progression and Growth in the University System, Professor Simon Ejembi spoke on Ethics in the University System: Rudiments and Pitfalls, and Professor Alex Wuanor addressed Strengthening University Governance through Alumni Participation.

The newly recruited employees expressed gratitude to the University for giving them the opportunity to serve their alma mater and contribute to its continued growth.
