Nigeria safely evacuates 1,230 citizens from Niger Republic amid crisis

The Federal Government has successfully evacuated 1,230 Nigerians stranded in the Republic of Niger amid political instability and security concerns, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of citizens abroad.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the evacuation was carried out in two batches: 708 returnees arrived on March 23, 2026, and 522 on March 29, 2026.

The operation was conducted in collaboration with national and international partners, notably the International Organization for Migration (IOM), whose technical and logistical support ensured a smooth process.

Upon arrival in Kano, the evacuees were received by a multi-agency team, including officials from the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, the National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Representatives from Kano State Emergency Management Agency, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, as well as officials of Kano and Katsina State Governments, were also present.

The evacuees underwent profiling at the airport for proper documentation and reintegration planning, before being transported to the Immigration Training School in Kano for temporary accommodation.

There, they received essential support, including meals, sanitary supplies, and medical care where necessary. After completing the procedures, the returnees were safely discharged and reunited with their families.

The Ministry emphasized that the operation reflects Nigeria’s proactive approach to safeguarding its citizens abroad and the humane treatment of returnees.

It also highlighted the importance of international cooperation and the strong bilateral relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger.

The Federal Government thanked the IOM and the International Committee of the Red Cross for their critical support and urged Nigerians abroad to comply with local laws, maintain contact with diplomatic missions, and register with the nearest embassy or consulate for assistance during emergencies.
