UI medical student dies after alleged poison ingestion, campus in mourning

A 200-level medical student of the University of Ibadan (UI), Ifeoluwa Wisdom Akinmade, has reportedly died after allegedly consuming a toxic substance, an incident that has left the university community in shock.

Sources within the institution said the student had been facing academic difficulties prior to the tragic development.

He was reportedly rushed to a medical facility within the university before being transferred to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he later passed away.

The death was announced in a statement jointly signed by officials of the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA), who expressed deep sorrow over the loss and described it as heartbreaking for colleagues and lecturers alike.

A social media post citing the hall warden of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall claimed the student was suspected to have ingested a substance believed to be Sniper, a popular pesticide.

Another unverified online report linked the incident to a low continuous assessment (CA) score. However, university authorities have yet to confirm these claims.

The spokesperson of UCH confirmed that the student was brought to the hospital after reportedly consuming a poisonous substance but did not survive.

As of the time of filing this report, the university management had not issued an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
