Nollywood mourns as veteran actor Francis Duru dies at 57
By Johnson Arua
Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, renowned for his role as Ahanna in the 1995 action thriller Rattlesnake, is dead. He was aged 57.
His family announced his death in a statement published on his verified Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, saying he died following a brief illness.
The announcement has marked another painful loss for Nigeria’s movie industry, where Duru spent more than three decades building a reputation as a versatile actor, filmmaker and creative professional.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the family said in the statement.
The family appealed to the public for prayers, love and understanding as it comes to terms with the loss of the veteran actor.
Duru was among the familiar faces of Nollywood whose performances helped shape the Nigerian film industry during its formative years, particularly in the 1990s, when locally produced films were gaining wider audiences across the country and beyond.
He shot to prominence through his portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, a crime-action film directed by the late Amaka Igwe and released in 1995. The production became one of the notable titles of its era, and Duru’s performance helped establish him as a recognisable figure in Nigerian cinema.
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru later moved to Nigeria, where he pursued his passion for the performing arts.
He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1996, and subsequently built a career that spanned acting, film production, directing and other aspects of the entertainment industry.
Over the years, Duru demonstrated his versatility by appearing in numerous Nollywood productions, taking on different roles and contributing to the growth of the industry.
Beyond the screen, he worked as a producer, director, voice-over artist and master of ceremonies, reflecting his involvement in several aspects of the creative sector.
His contributions also extended to professional representation within the industry. In 2010, he served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, the professional association representing actors in the country.
His work earned him recognition beyond the film industry. In 2007, he received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace Award, while in 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film category at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
Duru’s death comes two years after he suffered a devastating personal loss with the death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.
The actor had publicly mourned his son, a tragedy that brought an outpouring of sympathy from members of the entertainment industry and the public.
His passing is expected to renew reflections on the contributions of actors whose work helped establish Nollywood as one of Africa’s most prominent film industries.
Over the decades, Nigerian filmmakers and performers have played a significant role in taking indigenous stories, languages and cultural experiences to audiences at home and abroad, with actors such as Duru forming part of that creative journey.
Although the family has confirmed his death, details surrounding his illness and funeral arrangements were not provided in the announcement.
Duru is survived by his family.
